MUSEUMS

The proliferation of Silk Road-themed exhibits is complicated by the fact that they are organized, funded, and/or commissioned by disparate entities, thereby producing potentially divergent representations of the ancient past. This is important given the backdrop of a present-day vision of a BRI-Silk Road connection that potentially obscures the complexity and diversity of history. Do these exhibits suggest that multiple narratives, memories, and modes of interaction are still possible?

Each museum location below is integrally connected to and has its own claim to Silk Road heritage. We have chosen to focus on key exhibits across major points along both the ancient and the modern-day Silk Road. Please use the list below as both a tool for visualizing connectivity and a launching point for further image and museum exploration in the links provided.
